Zen-Sei is a Japanese-inspired lifestyle brand dedicated to bringing moments of tranquillity into everyday life through incense and tea.

Inspired by the concept of enjoying the gentle fragrance of incense, savouring a cup of tea and finding inner calm on a quiet evening, the logo brings together traditional Japanese aesthetics and contemporary minimalism.

The central motif is the Jūsanya moon, the moon of the thirteenth night, which has long held a special place in Japanese culture.

A single flowing curve passing in front of the moon carries two meanings: the delicate smoke rising from burning incense and the gentle steam drifting upwards from a warm cup of tea.

By expressing these two elements through one continuous line, the design captures the peaceful passage of time spent enjoying fragrance and tea. The harmonious composition of the moon, smoke and steam symbolises the tranquillity and sense of comfort at the heart of the brand.

The moon itself is constructed from a series of fine horizontal lines, creating a delicate visual texture that translates beautifully onto traditional Japanese washi paper and printed materials.

Soft, flowing curves are balanced with geometric horizontal lines, while unnecessary ornamentation is kept to a minimum. Careful consideration was given to line weights, proportions and negative space to create a refined and harmonious composition.

The identity was also developed with a variety of applications in mind, including traditional noren curtains, hanging scrolls, incense products, tea utensils and packaging.

Its simple, understated form is designed to complement natural materials such as washi paper, fabric and ceramics, allowing their individual textures and qualities to take centre stage.

Rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics yet naturally suited to contemporary living, the final design aims to create a timeless and quietly distinctive brand symbol that reflects Zen-Sei's philosophy of mindfulness, simplicity and inner calm.
