YOIN is a self-initiated brand identity project for a fictional Japanese speciality coffee roaster.
The name “YOIN” comes from the Japanese word 余韻, meaning a lingering impression or aftertaste. The concept reflects the subtle feeling that remains after finishing a cup of coffee, valuing not only its flavour and aroma but also the experience of the moment itself. Inspired by Japanese aesthetics, the brand identity embraces negative space and tranquillity to express this sense of quiet reflection.
Rather than directly reproducing traditional Japanese motifs, the symbol features an organic, flower-like form arranged within a circle. Drawing inspiration from the decorative metalwork found in Japanese shrines and temples, known as shaji bankin, the design reinterprets the beauty of traditional craftsmanship through a contemporary, refined visual language.
The colour palette combines warm off-white with deep navy, creating a balance of simplicity, warmth and understated sophistication. Consistent typography and carefully considered negative space establish a visual identity that feels quiet yet memorable.
Extending beyond the logo, the identity is applied across coffee packaging, boxes, paper bags and other branded materials. The website follows the same design principles, creating a cohesive experience from the moment a customer encounters the product to their interactions with the brand online.
By bringing together Japanese-inspired tranquillity and contemporary elegance, YOIN aims to communicate more than the coffee itself. It captures the lingering moments and sensations that remain long after the final sip.
