Bringing Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetics to the world.
A logo design and brand identity created for HAZUKI KNIFE, an Australia-based brand specialising in the production and sale of Japanese knives, as well as knife-sharpening workshops.
The design aims to reflect the precision, functional beauty and exceptional craftsmanship of Japanese knife-making traditions while creating a contemporary, refined visual identity that resonates naturally with an international audience.
The inspiration for the logo comes from the kissaki, the distinctive tip of a Japanese knife. Rather than simply illustrating the shape of a knife, the design abstracts its essential beauty into a distinctive symbol, capturing both the sharpness of the blade and the precision associated with Japanese craftsmanship.
A bold, extended outer form is balanced by a delicate inner line. The contrast between strong, angular elements and flowing curves, together with carefully considered negative space, brings together the sharpness of a blade and the fluid elegance of Japanese craftsmanship within a single composition.
By reducing ornamentation to a minimum, the symbol remains clear and recognisable at smaller sizes while retaining its visual impact in monochrome.
Versatility was also a key consideration, with the identity designed for a range of applications and materials, including laser engraving on knife blades, packaging, cards and leather knife cases. Particular attention was given to ensuring that the symbol maintains its presence when engraved directly onto the tools themselves, communicating the brand's quality and expertise.
By combining traditional Japanese craftsmanship with contemporary minimalism, the final design establishes a timeless brand symbol intended to represent HAZUKI KNIFE for years to come.
