DESIGN STORY
I created this logo for Shinbutsu Shugo Club, an organisation that encourages people to engage more closely and deeply with shrines, temples and Japanese spiritual culture.
Because the organisation explores both Shinto and Buddhism, I chose the tengu as the central motif — a figure that appears across both traditions.
Tengu are often depicted as stern or intimidating, so for this project I reinterpreted the character in a kimono with a warmer and more approachable expression. The aim was to create a symbol that still feels rooted in Japanese culture, while also conveying friendliness, playfulness and humanity.
The design uses simple linework and generous negative space so it remains clear across social media icons, websites, printed materials and event applications. I wanted the identity to work both as an engaging illustration and as a practical brand symbol.
Rather than presenting traditional culture as something formal or difficult to approach, the logo was designed as an inviting visual gateway that encourages curiosity and connection.
